Chapter Six

HOUND DOG

AND THAT WAS the story of her life. Publicly humiliated and she still couldn’t win a free dinner. “Tall Julie” ought to be used to it by now, the winks and nudges about her height. She still hated it. She could have answered almost every one of the Elvis questions, but she didn’t want to draw Lucky’s attention.

She eyed the empty glasses stacked up on Lucky’s table. He was still pretty sharp. Obviously he could hold his liquor.

As Luke signed the slip for their lunch, his phone rang. After he read the caller ID, he waved the phone and said, “Be right back.”

Up until this point she’d done pretty well at fending off the black cloud of doom over the stupid holiday. She’d been able to pretend that it was actually only a snow day, like many other snow days, even with a romantic comedy marathon. But there were a lot of couples trickling out of Viva Las Vegas. It was enough to make even a sane woman mutter. She could do sane 364 days a year, but holding onto her mental health was hard on this day. At least she wasn’t at work to see rose bouquets and flower arrangements paraded through the office.

When Luke didn’t immediately return, she decided to wander around to see what other wonders the Rock’n’Rolla Hotel might hold. She stood and walked out into the lobby before turning down a small hallway that advertised the pool area and workout room. Slowly flip-flopping in that direction, she perused the various album covers and photos of Elvis lining the hall until she became aware of footsteps behind her.

She glanced over her shoulder with a smile to see Lucky, the terrible impersonator, standing behind her. She motioned him around. “I’m in no hurry. Just waiting on the room key. Go ahead.”

He stepped closer, so close that her eyes watered at the smell of booze and she could see where the glue holding his sideburns on had squeezed out beneath whatever sort of hair it was.

His sleazy grin never made it to his eyes. “I just wanted to tell you your husband’s a lucky man.” His stare burned her from head to toe and back to meet her eyes. “He must be a leg man, like myself.”

Julie stepped back but bumped her elbow on the wall. Pulling her arms between them, she rubbed it and looked over his head. When he inched closer, she said, “Not my husband. A coworker stranded here just like me, but I should probably catch up with him. Don’t want to keep him waiting.”

When she moved to scoot around him, he moved with her to lean a shoulder against the wall. He reached up to run his other hand down her arm. “So you need a Valentine too, then. Am I right, Legs?” He wiggled his eyebrows. “If it’s a free dinner you’re looking for, I could probably hook you up. We could go back to my room and”—he licked his lips in what was probably supposed to be a seductive maneuver—“see what happens.
